Wikipedia:

A 'comedian' ('comedienne' if female) or 'comic' is a person who seeks to
entertain an audience, primarily by making them laugh. This might be through
jokes or amusing situations, or acting a fool, as in slapstick, or employing
prop comedy. A comedian who stands alone and addresses an audience directly is
called a stand-up comic.

A comedian can be distinguished from a clown because clowns most often use
slapstick, wear costumes and makeup, and engage in buffoonery, whereas comedians
most often focus on a more verbal style of humor, telling jokes.

A popular saying, variously quoted but generally attributed to Ed Wynn, name=Bartleby> is, "A comic says funny things; a comedian says things
funny," which draws a distinction between how much of the comedy can be
attributed to verbal content and how much to acting and persona.

Since the late 1980s, a new wave of comedy, called alternative comedy, grew in
popularity with its more offbeat and experimental style. This normally involves
more experiential, or observational reporting, e.g. Andy Kaufman, Alexei Sayle
and Malcolm Hardee. Alternative comedy is now arguably the mainstream.

As far as content is concerned, comedians such as Tommy Tiernan draw on their
background to poke fun at themselves, while others such as Bill Maher and George
Carlin have strong political and cultural undertones.

Many comics achieve a cult following while touring famous comedy hubs such as
the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, the Edinburgh Fringe, and Melbourne
Comedy Festival in Australia. Often a comic's career advances significantly when
they win a notable comedy award, such as the if.comedy award (formerly the
Perrier comedy award). Comics sometimes foray into other areas of entertainment,
such as film and television, when they have become much better known.

The Edinburgh Fringe

The Fringe is probably one of the most popular events held in Edinburgh, Scotland. It takes place annually in August for three weeks in conjunction with other arts and cultural festivals, which are known collectively as the Edinburgh Festival. The Fringe boasts of a zany mixture of different acts that make it the biggest performing arts festival in the whole world. The Festival Fringe Society is the organizer of the event. It is in charge of selling tickets, publishing the programme, and giving advice to the performers. The office of The Fringe is found along the Royal Mile.

The Fringe showcases a wide selection of shows. These are mostly performing arts, in particular the comedy and drama genre. Also involved in the programs are music and dance. The theater events usually include classic plays of ancient Greece, Samuel Beckett, and Shakespeare. They also show newer works, even experimental ones. No selection committee approves what acts are to be shown, so any type of event may be held.

Comedy is also a popular theme. Comedy shows offer free admission. This is partly because the audience is consuming enough food and beverage in the venue to be able to pay for the show. However, dont expect to see established comedians here. Most of the time, up and coming comedians are the ones who perform. Also, there are open microphone sessions, wherein some audience members go up the stage and attempt to entertain the crowd with their comedy acts.

Unlike the other events of the Edinburgh Festival, the venues of the acts of The Fringe are not your usual performance halls and theaters. The Fringe takes over less conventional locations, such as the streets, schools, church halls, temporary structures (i.e. Udderbelly and Spiegeltent), the back of a taxi, public toilets, and even in the homes of some of the members of the audience. However, some may also be held in proper theaters (i.e. Bedlam Theater), historic castles, custom-made theaters (i.e. Music Hall), and conference centers.

Furthermore, the performers also come from diverse backgrounds. Some are non-profit while others are commercial. Some only perform at The Fringe, while others hail from famous theater groups and perform all-year round.

What makes the The Fringe very interesting and appealing is the fact that you would never know what to expect. In fact, you wouldnt know what kind of acts you could find. A world-famous theater troupe could present or a novice group could take over the stage. The quality of the shows does not really matter for that is not the point of the festival. The Fringe simply serves as a conglomeration of ideas and achievements in the performing arts in the UK and worldwide. It serves as a venue where people can experience a feast for their senses by watching these shows that occur simultaneously.

However, for those of you who cant go to Edinburgh to see The Fringe in person, you have the option of watching it through the Internet by accessing its official website. By visiting this website, you will be able to see the reviews and ratings of the events made by the attendees themselves. It also has an online television channel that features the webcasts of some of the acts. Also posted are interviews with a few of the performers and a news bulletin that updates you of the current happenings.

The Hip Hop Culture Identity

Hip-hop isn't just about music. Hip-hop is about dance, art, expression, pain, love, racism, sexism, broken families, hard times, overcoming adversity and the search for God. Its a culture, a way of life, a language, a fashion, a set of values, and a unique perspective. Hip-hop is about trying to live out the American dream from the bottom up.

Hip-Hop culture is a unique phenomenon because it does incorporate and affect so many different cultures, ages and classes. In the early 1970s the unnamed culture known today as hip-hop was forming in New York Citys ghettos. Each element in this culture had its own history and terminology contributing to the development of a cultural movement. The culture was identified in the early 1980s when DJ Afrika Bambaataa named the dynamic urban movement, hip-hop. Since that time hip-hop has served as a powerful voice and form of expression for young black audiences and has evolved into a culture with its own language, style of dress and mindset. The hip hop culture envelops not only music but also fashion and dance.

What makes hip hops evolution is the range of flavor the culture has to offer and what hip-hop heads thrive on is individuality and creativity, which is never more apparent than in hip-hop fashion. In fact, hip hop fashion is one of the top clothing industries in the world today. It is claimed to have begun in the African American community but has spread quickly into being a truly universal style for people of all ethnicities and sexes and a lynch pin of hip hop culture. Hip hop fashion is preferred by various celebrities such as 50 cent, Puff Daddy, Ja Rule and Sean Combs. It is often satirized by comedians such as Ali G. Hip hop fashion is a visible element of hip hop culture.

Hip hop dancing is evolving in many different directions today, heavily influenced by the evolution of hip hop music and its popularity in media, surrounded by heated debates on history and authenticity. Modern hip hop music gave birth to new styles of hip hop dancing partly inspired by the old school styles. Most of those styles focused on upright dancing as opposed to breakdance which is better known for its floor-oriented movements. To express ones creative talent, hip-hop dancing is perhaps the best way in which impressions and expressions come from the soul.

Music has always played a key role in shaping minds and attitudes. Hip hop music sheds light on contemporary politics, history and race. The social influence hip hop music has on the hip hop cultural movement includes activities of dancing, associated slang, fashion and other elements. Hip hop music encompasses the written word, visual art, dance and rhythmic style with intricate beats. Music has no boundaries and no limits; anything worthy should be available through music, especially spirituality and religion. A big influence on the hip hop identity is its redeeming music.

Culture is the product of a current reality. The identity of a culture is created by the work and thought of human beings. It is the expression of a class or element of a particular class and is reflective of a certain period. The allure of Hip Hop culture as an organizing mechanism has arisen primarily because there is no existing political apparatus that adequately addresses the needs of young people and/or poor and working class communities; in a political vacuum. Culture, as a general matter, cuts to the core of how people articulate their beliefs, values and customs. Hip Hop culture is the most visible and vocal representative entity of its own identity.
