au·thor
  Audio Help   (ô'thər)   Pronunciation Key

n.

The writer of a book, article, or other text.
One who practices writing as a profession.

One who writes or constructs an electronic document or system, such as a website.
An originator or creator, as of a theory or plan.
Author God.

tr.v.

au·thored , au·thor·ing , au·thors

Usage Problem To assume responsibility for the content of (a published text).
To write or construct (an electronic document or system): authored the company's website.

[Middle English auctour , from Old French autor , from Latin auctor , creator , from auctus , past participle of augēre , to create ; see aug- in Indo-European roots.]

au·thor'i·al (ô-thôr'ē-əl, ô-thŏr'-) adj.

Usage Note : The verb author, which had been out of use for a long period, has been rejuvenated in recent years with the sense "to assume responsibility for the content of a published text." As such it is not quite synonymous with the verb write; one can write, but not author, a love letter or an unpublished manuscript, and the writer who ghostwrites a book for a celebrity cannot be said to have "authored" the creation. The sentence He has authored a dozen books on the subject was unacceptable to 74 percent of the Usage Panel, probably because it implies that having a book published is worthy of special lexical distinction, a notion that sits poorly with conventional literary sensibilities and seems to smack of press agentry. The sentence The Senator authored a bill limiting uses of desert lands in California was similarly rejected by 64 percent of the Panel, though here the usage is common journalistic practice and is perhaps justified by the observation that we do not expect that legislators will actually write the bills to which they attach their names. · The use of author as a verb in computer-related contexts is well established and unexceptionable.

author
c.1300, autor "father," from O.Fr. auctor, from L. auctorem (nom. auctor ) "enlarger, founder," lit. "one who causes to grow," agent noun from augere "to increase" (see augment ). Meaning "one who sets forth written statements" is from c.1380. The -t- changed to -th- on mistaken assumption of Gk. origin. The verb is attested from 1596. "...[W]riting means revealing onesself to excess .... This is why one can never be alone enough when one writes, why even night is not night enough. ... I have often thought that the best mode of life for me would be to sit in the innermost room of a spacious locked cellar with my writing things and a lamp. Food would be brought and always put down far away from my room, outside the cellar's outermost door. The walk to my food, in my dressing gown, through the vaulted cellars, would be my only exercise. I would then return to my table, eat slowly and with deliberation, then start writing again at once. And how I would write! From what depths I would drag it up!" [Franz Kafka]

An 'author' is defined both as "the person who originates or gives existence to
anything" and that authorship determines responsibility for what is created. The
second entry goes on to clarify that, when using the term author, the "anything"
which is created is most usually associated with written work.

Article Directories For Profit

Are you looking to increase the amount of traffic that your website sees? If you rely on your website for income, there is a good chance that you are. If you are unfamiliar with internet marketing, you may have done a little bit of online research. While researching internet marketing, there is a good chance that you came across article directories. Article directories are essentially online websites that display content, often with links. These links should link readers directly to your website, whether it be an online store or a content site. When it comes to article directories, one of the most common questions asked is is it worth the time? In all honesty, it depends.

Submitting articles to article directories is a great way to increase traffic to your website, but it all depends on the approach that you take. If you are looking to benefit from submitting articles to article directories, there are a number of important factors that you will want to take into consideration. These factors, which are outlined below, may have a significant impact on the amount of traffic that your website sees from article distribution.

As it was mentioned above, article directories are essentially websites that display a collection of content. That content, which is accompanied by links, is often placed into specific categories, such as parenting, money, business, and so on. As article distribution has increased in popularity, so have article directories. This means that it is possible to find hundred of article directories that are willing to accept your articles and have them displayed on their site. While your first impulse may be to submit your articles to every article directory that you can find, you may want to reexamine your decision to do so, as it can be time consuming. In fact, it may be a good idea to research article directories, find, and submit articles to the directories that are considered the most popular or those that come highly rated and recommend.

It is also important that you examine how often you submit content. As with your website, you are urged to update it often or at least add new content to it. After all, it is a known fact that internet users like to see new, refreshed content. The same can be said for the articles that you submit to article directories. You will want to develop a schedule. Submitting new articles to article directories a couple of times a week is a good goal to have. In fact, the more you can submit, the better the results are likely to be. The more articles that you have distributed across the internet, the more links you will have. This, in turn, will increase your chances of seeing your websites traffic increase.

Although producing and disturbing a large number of articles is your best chance of success with article directories, you also want to examine the content that you are submitting. It is extremely important that your content is interesting, readable, and presentable. That is why it is important that you do not rush when creating articles. In fact, it may be a good idea to proofread your articles multiple times, before distributing them online. It is also advised that you view your articles, once they have been published online. Most article directories will allow you to post links to your websites at the end of your article page. For article directories to work to your benefit, you need to make sure that readers make it to the end of your article. This is why interesting and readable articles are vital to your success.

As long as you keep the above mentioned points in mind, you should be able to benefit from submitting to article directories. To get you started, you may want to examine Ezine Articles - http://www.ezinearticles.com/, Isnare Articles - http://www.isnare.com/ and Article Alley - http://www.articlealley.com; they are considered three of the most highly rated and recommended article directories online.

P.S. Article directories are a great way to increase your websites traffic, but they are also a great way to get your name, as an author, out into the internet community.

First Date Disaster: How To Ruin A Perfect Date In Just 30 Seconds

Everything was going so perfectly on our first date, until...well, until it happened

The restaurant hed chosen was wonderful. He was there on time, looking hot, he even held the door open for me. Over drinks, we had great eye contact and the conversation came easily. By the time we were seated for dinner, I was already feeling quite starry eyed and charmed. I think Ive finally found my Mr. Right, I secretly celebrated.

Dinner was truly delicious. But, somewhere between the appetizer and the salad there was this moment of silence. He didnt seem to mind. He sat there and smiled at me as he munched on a piece of French bread. But, I panicked. Had we run out of things to talk about already? So, instead of taking that next bite like I told myself I should, I opened my mouth and filled the silence with a rapid fire, take-no-prisoners series of the five most deadly dangerous conversation killing sins anybody can commit on a first date.

Its all kind of a blur right now, but the disaster unfolded something like this (imagine taking one breath and having all this blow out of you as you exhaled):

So, this is some restaurant, isnt it? You must make a lot of *money*, right? My last boyfriend would never take me out to a place like this. He was too cheap. I hate cheap people, dont you? Everything tastes so good here, although if you ask me, they need to hire a new decorator. I probably shouldnt have dessert because I just cant stand the way my butt looks right now. My mom always nags me about my weight. Get off my case already, mom! And, now that I think about it my cheap ex-boyfriend always did, too. He also always chewed with his mouth open, which irritated me like crazy...Im having such a nice time, arent you?

Im not sure if the question mark had even come out of my mouth when I saw the door to the restaurant swing closed. Ive never seen a man move so fast. It took me a minute to regain my composure. Then, I realized that within the span of 30 seconds Id massacred this perfect date by bringing up the five off-limits, absolute no-no topics for a first date.

Tanya Haden Tebb, relationship expert and author, had told me in her eBook, How to Attract MenThe Goddess Secrets, to never ever under any circumstances talk about these five downers on a first date. And, here Id gone and talked about all of them in the time it takes for a man to (almost) finish chewing a piece of semi-stale bread with that really creamy butter on top.

In my nervousness and fear of ruining the perfect date with a moment of silence, Id brought up 1) Money, 2) Ex-Relationships, 3) Things I dont like, 4) Things I dont like about myself, and 5) My family, which Haden Tebb says to only bring up if theyre totally great. Oops! I barfed out all five of the dont ever speak about these topics! No wonder he bolted!

Why oh why, in my moment of panic, did I not remember to bring up any of Haden Tebbs 10 Topics of First Date Conversation That Are Guaranteed To Win & Woo Any Man! She implores women everywhere to use these topics if you want to keep men hanging on your every word and get an invite for the second date before youve even finished introducing yourself.

As I hailed a cab to go home alone, again, I thought, Next time Ill just make sure I keep my mouth full of food the whole time. That way, if I forget to use the Secrets I learned, at least I wont say anything Ill regret.
