'Sean' or 'Seán' is an Irish derivative of the Norman-French forename, Jehan,
which itself derives from the Latin "Joannes" (meaning "John"). Like many other
common Irish forenames (Sinéad, Piaras, Siobhán, Liam, etc.), Seán first
appears in Ireland following the Norman invasion of Ireland. Common variants of
the name include Shaun (chiefly British), Shawn (chiefly USA), Siôn (Welsh),
Ceon (Scottish) and Shane. With its Latin origin, Seán has a long history that
traces back to Hebrew name יוחנן (yôḥānnān), which means "Yahweh is
gracious". Yahweh is treated as the name of God in Hebrew. Yôḥānnān was the
name of several important Jewish rabbis in the Second Temple Period in
Palestine, such as Yochanan ben Zakai and Yochanan ben Nuri.

The name had gained popularity among Jews in Judea and Galilee by the time the
area became a province of the Roman Empire in 6 A.D. It was the given name of
Yochanan ben Zechariah, a Jewish prophet known in English as John the Baptist.
It was also the given name of Yochanan ben Zibhdi, a fisherman from Galilee who
became one of the favorite students (called disciples) of Jesus Christ and so is
known in English as John the Apostle. Because Yochanan also wrote one of the
four accounts of the life of Jesus Christ called gospels, the Gospel of St.
John, he is also known as John the Evangelist.

The texts that tell of the lives of both these men named Yochanan were written
in Greek, and their name was adapted in Greek as Ἰωάννης, Iōánnēs
(pronounced YO-han-NAYS). The name 'Ioannes' became extremely popular among the
early Christians, and bearers include such noted members of the early church as
Ioannes Chrysostomos and the Ioannes who wrote the Book of Revelation.

Because of the great respect Christians had for these men, the name came into
use in other parts of the Christianized Roman Empire, even in remoter parts such
as Gaul and Britain. The Western areas of the Roman Empire did not, however,
speak Greek like the areas in the East. Instead, they spoke Latin. Accordingly,
in the Western part of the Roman Empire the name was Latinized as 'Iohannes'
(pronounced like the Greek).

The local populations in these areas of the Roman Empire soon changed Roman
names to fit their own dialect, which included dropping the suffixes -us and -es
from such names. Johannes became the Germanic 'Johann', for example, and on the
outskirts of the Empire in the newly converted Ireland it became the Irish
'Eoin'. In some cases, the pronunciation of the "J" also changed from the
original "Y", so that in Iberia the name eventually changed to the Spanish
'Juan' and in Gaul to the French 'Jean'.

In the 11th century the French duke William the Conqueror invaded and conquered
England and brought his French knights and their dialect with him. In England,
the French name Jean came to be spelled '[[John]]'. The Norman kings of England
also conquered Ireland in the 13th century and the 14th century. The Irish
nobility was replaced by Norman nobles, some of whom bore the French name Jean
or the Anglicized name John. The Irish adapted the name to their own
pronunciation and spelling, producing the name 'Seán'. Sean is mostly
pronounced SHAWN, but in the northern parts of Ireland it is pronounced SHAYN,
thus leading to the variant '[[Shane]]'.

The Hip Hop Culture Identity

Hip-hop isn't just about music. Hip-hop is about dance, art, expression, pain, love, racism, sexism, broken families, hard times, overcoming adversity and the search for God. Its a culture, a way of life, a language, a fashion, a set of values, and a unique perspective. Hip-hop is about trying to live out the American dream from the bottom up.

Hip-Hop culture is a unique phenomenon because it does incorporate and affect so many different cultures, ages and classes. In the early 1970s the unnamed culture known today as hip-hop was forming in New York Citys ghettos. Each element in this culture had its own history and terminology contributing to the development of a cultural movement. The culture was identified in the early 1980s when DJ Afrika Bambaataa named the dynamic urban movement, hip-hop. Since that time hip-hop has served as a powerful voice and form of expression for young black audiences and has evolved into a culture with its own language, style of dress and mindset. The hip hop culture envelops not only music but also fashion and dance.

What makes hip hops evolution is the range of flavor the culture has to offer and what hip-hop heads thrive on is individuality and creativity, which is never more apparent than in hip-hop fashion. In fact, hip hop fashion is one of the top clothing industries in the world today. It is claimed to have begun in the African American community but has spread quickly into being a truly universal style for people of all ethnicities and sexes and a lynch pin of hip hop culture. Hip hop fashion is preferred by various celebrities such as 50 cent, Puff Daddy, Ja Rule and Sean Combs. It is often satirized by comedians such as Ali G. Hip hop fashion is a visible element of hip hop culture.

Hip hop dancing is evolving in many different directions today, heavily influenced by the evolution of hip hop music and its popularity in media, surrounded by heated debates on history and authenticity. Modern hip hop music gave birth to new styles of hip hop dancing partly inspired by the old school styles. Most of those styles focused on upright dancing as opposed to breakdance which is better known for its floor-oriented movements. To express ones creative talent, hip-hop dancing is perhaps the best way in which impressions and expressions come from the soul.

Music has always played a key role in shaping minds and attitudes. Hip hop music sheds light on contemporary politics, history and race. The social influence hip hop music has on the hip hop cultural movement includes activities of dancing, associated slang, fashion and other elements. Hip hop music encompasses the written word, visual art, dance and rhythmic style with intricate beats. Music has no boundaries and no limits; anything worthy should be available through music, especially spirituality and religion. A big influence on the hip hop identity is its redeeming music.

Culture is the product of a current reality. The identity of a culture is created by the work and thought of human beings. It is the expression of a class or element of a particular class and is reflective of a certain period. The allure of Hip Hop culture as an organizing mechanism has arisen primarily because there is no existing political apparatus that adequately addresses the needs of young people and/or poor and working class communities; in a political vacuum. Culture, as a general matter, cuts to the core of how people articulate their beliefs, values and customs. Hip Hop culture is the most visible and vocal representative entity of its own identity.

Mark Ronson's Singular Trip Down Grammy Road

32-year old Mark Ronson has attained a high level of achievement in the music industry: he is a producer, cover-artist, co-founder of Allido Records, and more importantly, one of the fastest rising stars in the business.

After moving to New York with his parents at an early age, he took a liking to hip hop music and tried to start his own band. The project failed, so he started spinning disks on the DJ circuit in the early 1990s. He soon became a regular in clubs all over New York City, incorporating the lively hip hop music found in the States at that time with the blossoming Brit-Rock music scene back in the UK. He was soon one of the most respected DJs in New York, and was being called to perform regularly at celebrities' private parties.

He then moved on to producing music, when he signed a recording contract with Elektra Records. His first album, Here Comes the Fuzz, was released in 2003 and was a critically-acclaimed success, featuring artists from several genres, including Sean Paul. Perhaps the best known song from the album is Ooh Wee, which samples Boney M and features Nate Dogg, Ghostface Killah and Trife Da God.

In 2004 he formed his own record label, Allido Records, a subsidiary of Sony BMG's J Records, along with his longtime manager Rich Kleiman. The first artist he signed was rapper Rhymefest who went on to win a Grammy for co-writing Kanye West's Jesus Walks.

In March 2006, Ronson released a cover of Radiohead's Just as a single. It received major radio play in the UK and was also released as part of Exit Music, Radioheads covers album.

His second album, Version, came in April 2007 and debuted at number 2 on the album charts. It includes other well-respected covers from a diverse range of artists, including Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen, Coldplay, Britney Spears, Ryan Adams, Maxmo Park, The Zutons, Amy Winehouse and Kasabian. The album spent 31 weeks on the UK charts, 13 of them in the top 10.

Version also received excellent reviews from the picky British music press: Mixmag awarded it Album of the Month in May 2007. In June of the same year, Ronson appeared on the cover of the Guardian newspaper's Guide magazine, alongside Lily Allen, although equivalent coverage in the US press has not been forthcoming. This hasnt stopped him from charting on Billboard's Rhythm, Dance and R&B charts however, with Stop Me reaching number 4 in the Hot Dance Play chart.

In October 2007, Ronson performed a one-time-only set at The Roundhouse in Camden Town as part of the BBC Electric Proms. The performance featured the BBC Concert Orchestra and included special guests like Terry Hall from The Specials, Sean Lennon, Tim Burgess and Alex Greenwald.

Ronson received a Grammy nomination in December 2007 for Producer of the Year (Non Classical), along with Timbaland and Mike Elizondo. Ronson's work with Amy Winehouse has also brought him substantial praise, garnering six nominations in all. Back To Black, an album completely produced by Ronson, was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

In short, Mark Ronsons discography of studio albums includes 2003s Here Comes the Fuzz (which reached #70 in the UK), and 2007s Version (reaching #2 on the British charts). In February 2008, he won a Grammy as Producer Of The Year.
