north
O.E. norð, from P.Gmc. *nurtha- (cf. O.N. norðr, O.Fris. north, M.Du. nort, Du. noord, Ger. nord ), possibly ult. from PIE *ner- "left," also "below," as north is to the left when one faces the rising sun (cf. Skt. narakah "hell," Gk. enerthen "from beneath," Oscan-Umbrian nertrak "left"). The same notion underlies Ir. tuaisceart "north." The usual word for "north" in the Romance languages is ultimately from English, cf. O.Fr. north (Fr. nord ), borrowed from O.E. norð ; It., Sp. norte are borrowed from O.Fr. North-easter "wind blowing from the northeast" is from 1794. North American first used 1766, by Franklin. Northwest Passage first attested 1600. Northerner in U.S. geo-political sense is attested from 1831. North Sea in O.E. meant the Bristol Channel; transf. c.1290 to what had been called the "German Ocean." Northern lights "aurora borealis" first recorded 1721. North Star "Pole Star" is M.E. norþe sterre (1398, cf. M.Du. noirdstern, Ger. nordstern ).

:This is about the direction; for other uses, see [[North (disambiguation)]].
'North' is one of the four cardinal directions, specifically the direction that,
in Western culture, is treated as the fundamental direction:
* North is used (explicitly or implicitly) to define all other directions.
* The (visual) top edges of maps usually correspond to the northern edge of the
area represented, unless explicitly stated otherwise or landmarks are
considered more useful for that territory than specific directions.

Starting A Vegetable Garden

Spring is the time of year when we think about creating a vegetable garden, especially with all the emphasis on the damage that long transport distances do to the ecosystem, never mind the fact that we are eating vegetables that are not quite as fresh as they might be! When choosing the location for your vegetable garden forget the old idea that the veg patch must be an ugly spot. If carefully designed, thoughtfully planted and well cared for, it will be feature of your garden, bringing a touch of homeliness that no formal bed could ever create.

Bearing this in mind you should not restrict yourself to any area of the garden just because it is out of sight. In the average modern garden there won't be much choice as to land anyway. You will need to use what you have available and then do the best that you can with it. There will probably be more choice as to exposure and convenience. All things being equal, try and choose a spot reasonably close to the house with easy access. It may seem that the difference of only a few yards is hardly relevant, but if you are depending largely on snatched spare moments for working in the vegetable garden easy access will be much more important than you might realise. Only when you have made a dozen unnecessary trips for forgotten bits and pieces, or ended up getting wet as you dash in and out will you realise that it would have been much easier to have the veg garden just that little bit closer!

Alongside convenience you need to pick out a spot that has suitable exposure to Sun and rain. You don't want to use a spot that is blasted by cold winds and likely to catch a frost. Choose the "earliest" spot you can find, ideally sloping a little to the south or east, that catches the sunshine early and holds it late. Chill winds from the north and northeast can have dramatic effects on your yield so if you can pick a spot that gets some shelter be it from a garden building, fence or the house itself, your plot will be protected and your vegetables will get an early start. If there is no protection available think about planting a low hedge or putting some other form of protection in place if you are intending to grow all your own supplies.

It is unlikely that you will be able to choose the type of soil as most gardens are not big enough to have a variety of soils available. This is not really a problem as most soils can be improved quite easily to give the ideal growing conditions. The best soil for growing vegetables is said to be a 'rich and sandy loam'. That is a soil type that is almost never found but always made! It needs to be full of nutrients that are easily available for the plants to grow well. This can be achieved by the addition of compost and plant feed, either organic or chemical depending on your preference. The 'sandyness' refers to drainage. If your soil is too heavy the water will form a sticky mess that isn't good for your plants, equally if it is too sandy the water will pass through before the plants can take advantage of it. You can easily add sand or soil conditioners to get your drainage right.

Before planting you should make sure that the plot is well dug and prepared for your precious seedlings. In an ideal world we would plan our vegetable garden in the autumn, digging it over and working in lots of organic material. The winter weather would help to break up the soil and work in the nutrients giving a perfect growing medium when the warmer Spring weather comes. However, it isn't the end of the world if you haven't done that. You might have to work a little bit harder at first to make sure the soil is clear of weeds, stones and other rubbish but that won't take long and the sense of achievement when your new vegetable plot is all prepared is well worth it.

My vegetable garden is one of the most satisfying parts of my garden I love to go out each day and pick the vegetables that we will be eating, knowing that they are as fresh and wholesome as they can be. The constant supply of fresh seasonal foods is a great reward for the little effort that it takes to maintain.

African Safari Boating And Wildlife Safaris

If you are looking for an African safari adventure, you will often find your self spoilt for choices. There is Kenya with it's famous wildlife including the great wilderbeest migration in masai mara. Then there is southern Africa with a lot to offer. If you are a water person then, paddling up creeks, gliding across placid lakes and pushing through reeds while dodging crocodiles is an exciting way of seeing wildlife, not so much for glimpses of crocs, or hippos (which may just be showing their nostrils), but for the animals, so you can get much closer. Canoeing or boating safaris are most rewarding in semi-arid areas, whose rivers and lakes are obviously of paramount importance to local wildlife.

Sadly kenya's masai mara and the famous mara where the wildebeest migration occurs each year doesn't offer that to visitors.

In West Africa drifting along in a canoe on the River Niger is a major thrill, especially on the edge of Nigers portion of hyenas and jackals can be seen. Guineas parc National du Haut Niger is more wooded, and gives you a chance of spotting chimpanzees. Gabon is excellent for pirogue trips, with boats available in coastal Akanda National Park, and inland at Minkebe Lope National Parks. In East Africa, Tanzanias Selous Game Reserve is the main place for boating, which can be combined with bush walks.

Youre spoilt for choice in Southern Africa. Boating safaris in Zambias South Lungwa National Park are very popular, and the country also allows canoeing safaris in the swampy Kafue National Park (great for water-loving antelopes), and along the Zambezi. In the latter you can extend your trip over several days, spending nights under canvas. Neighbouring Zimbabwe also offers Zambezi canoeing expeditions, as part of trips to Mana pools National Park. To the north, Malawis Liwonde National Park is an exceptional place for seeing elephants, hippos, crocs and birds from a boat, while boats are also the best way to get around the swampy wildlife sanctuaries of Namibias Capriivi Strip.

If you use a horse or an elephant as a as a means of transport youll be often be able to approach other species much more closely than you would if you were on foot or in a car. Neither horseback nor elephant-back safaris are particularly widespread in africa, however; in general horses dont have too good a time of it in Africa thanks to sleeping sickness and other parasitic diseases. Good places for horseback safaris include Kenya's masai mara, Botswanas elephant-packed Tuli and Mashatu Game Reserves, Northern Malawis inspiring Nyika Plateau, Zimbabwes Lake Mutirikwe National Park (where you can get close to white rhinos), the alphine highlands of Ethiopias Bale Mountains National Park, and Swazilands Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. There are also horseback safaris at masai mara.

Unlike their Asian cousins, the African elephant has never been too partial to the ideal of having to lug people around on their backs, so the recent introduction of elephant back safaris in Zambia (Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park), South Africa (Pilanesburg National Park), and in Botswanas diminutive Mokolodi Nature Reserve, owes unwitting thanks to the days ivory poaching. Orphaned elephants rescued by sanctuaries, and their offspring, have grown up to be trusting of humans.

Lastly dont forget camels. In Nigers Air Mountains, where small population of Savanna animals still survive, you can spend days on camelback exploring the edges of the Tenere sand dunes.

Actually, days isnt quite true after a few hours in the saddle, youll probably find walking a rather more comfortable experience.
