Moving Home Tips
By George Russell
6 Weeks before your move - Confirm your moving date and arrange your home insurance to cover you on the day you move in.

Get at least 3 quotes for removal costs. Try and use a company who is a member of the British Association of Removers. Check if they offer discount if you move on a weekday. Make sure there is insurance covering any damage to goods during transit.

Notify the utility companies of your moving date. Arrange gas, electricity and water meter readings on your old and new property.

Arrange your new telephone / internet/ satellite/ cable connection.

2 weeks before moving - Confirm your moving time and ensure the removal company have directions to your new home.

Organise a time to collect your new keys and hand over your old keys with the Estate agents.

Get your mail redirected by the Post Office to your new house.

Send your change of address and phone number cards or emails - friends, relatives, employer, school, bank, credit card company, vets, council tax, DVLA etc.

If you're moving out of the area de-register from your doctor and dentist. Remember to register in your new area.

Notify

any local services, such as papers, milk, window cleaning, etc and arrange a cancellation date.

Start to pack any non-essential items, i.e books, spare clothes.

Day before your move - Defrost fridge/freezer.

Label boxes and carpets with the room you want them put in. Mark boxes with any fragile items, so the removal firm will know to take special care.

Pack a bag with essentials and keep it with you - toiletries, underwear, light bulbs, fuses, loo roll, candles, matches, cash, phone charger and tools.

Moving Day - Unplug any remaining appliances.

Make sure a box containing a kettle, tea, cups, bedding is loaded last, so it is the first to be unpacked - don't forget the champagne and glasses! Keep your essential bag out of the way, such as in the car, or label 'Do Not Remove'.

Count the boxes to be moved and check when they are delivered that you have them all.

Try and make the beds and hang the bedroom curtains as soon as possible, as by the end of the day you'll be pretty exhausted. Don't try to do all your unpacking on the first day. Enjoy your new home and open the champagne!
